In addition to the  The staple diagramstaple diagram<//a>, the Fibrogram (Fig. 7) is available. Whereas in the staple diagram the fibers are aligned at one end, in the Fibrogram they are arranged by clamping randomly distributed fibers of a cotton sample. The fibers protuding from the clamps are straightened by a brushing process and measured optically.

The normal staple diagram represents an artificial picture, which does not occur anywhere in practice, but the Fibrogram corresponds to the arrangement of fibers at the nip line of rollers. It gives a good representation of the drafting operation and of the arrangement of the fibers in the yarn. It is produced by high volume instrumentation such as HVI. The lengths are stated as span-lengths, that is, lengths of clamed fibers that exceed a certain distance.
