Efficient wool yarn winding

Wool yarns have a long tradition in the textile and fashion industry and continue to gain importance in functional and technical applications. Their unique characteristics – such as elasticity, breathability, moisture management, softness, sustainability, fire resistance – combined with the wide variety of wool blends, including acrylic, cashmere or elastane combinations, require stable and flexible processing conditions. Wool and its blends can be carded, combed, worsted or semi-worsted; supplied as single or plied yarns; and range from fine to coarse counts.

To remain competitive, wool yarn processing demands high flexibility, precise quality control, advanced automation, supported by data-based process management.

The Autoconer X6 is Rieter’s key machine for wool yarn winding. It combines flexible automation, high process reliability and intelligent data control to produce consistently high‑quality packages for efficient downstream processing.

Winding solutions for efficient wool yarn processing

Highly flexible and efficient in spinning mill automation

The Autoconer X6 provides flexible automation solutions tailored to the sensitive requirements of wool yarn processing. Intelligent automation prevents quality loss and avoids waste of valuable wool fibers. As wool yarns are often produced in small lots, the process requires high flexibility and reliable prevention of material mix-ups. With its advanced functions the Autoconer X6 ensures high processing stability.

Advanced automation features:

  • Direct link solutions with integrated steaming devices are possible, often used in wool processing.
  • To protect valuable wool yarns from costly mix‑ups, Color Check prevents incorrect cop allocation and avoids failures in material feeding.
  • Q‑Package and SPID optimize feed‑material handling and alarm‑cop management, essential for continuous quality control.
  • Multilink, Multilot and Duo‑Lot: highly flexible automation solutions — ideal for small‑lot production in wool processing.
  • The Cop Exchanger is a further step into higher automation in wool yarn processing with automatic cops handling.

Splice technology – proven and effective for wool

The Autoconer was the first winding machine equipped with an integrated Thermosplicer, specifically designed for the thermoplastic characteristics of wool and wool blends. The Thermosplicer delivers highly reproducible splice joints for all wool-based materials. With continuous development and optimization, the Thermosplicer remains a market-leading solution for wool applications.

Thermosplicer for excellent splice results in wool application

Precision splicing features

  • High consistency of splice quality
  • Open, easy to clean and maintain design
  • Central adjustment of splice-air temperature for optimal results across different fiber types
  • Two separate heating systems (prism heating and air-splice heating) ensure constant temperature, independent of cycle count
  • Quick-change unit for fast conversion between S- and Z-twist applications
  • Rapid cooling function for improved operator safety

Excellent package quality for high downstream efficiency

Sensitive wool fibers require gentle, precise and highly flexible winding to preserve their structure and ensure consistent quality. Advanced sensor technology, continuous monitoring, autocalibration and intelligent process controls provide exactly this level of protection and efficiency, supporting the increasing demands in wool processing for quality, flexibility and operator independence.

Consistent package quality features

  • For twisting, dyeing, knitting or weaving, wool yarn processing needs flexible package formats. Preci FX delivers this flexibility with software-controlled package build-up, round-edge dye packages and switchable traverse widths (3”, 4”, 6”).
  • Autotense FX, Variotense FX, Propack FX, Variopack FX ensure uniform package build-up, and especially prevent bulging-out flanks – particularly important when processing elastic wool or wool/elastane blends.
  • Waxing modules, incl. wax-roll monitoring, ensure reliable waxing tailored to wool yarns, which need increased wax application because of their naturally scaly fiber structure.

Data management and process transparency

Wool processing requires maximum utilization of high-value material. Intelligent data management supports stable production, reduces resource consumption and increases overall processing efficiency.

Smart digitization features:

  • SPID online quality monitoring ensures early detection of quality deviations and enables fast, targeted process adjustments to avoid valuable raw material waste.
  • Ring-Winder-Connect analyzes production and quality data from both the ring-spinning machine and the Autoconer, supporting high yarn quality, productivity and operator guidance.
  • Early detection of quality deviations enables intelligent operator guiding and targeted process optimization.

What customers say about processing wool with the Autoconer X6

For us, the Autoconer is the benchmark for winding machines in the wool yarn spinning sector, and therefore the first choice for us as the market leader. Its Thermosplicer is the most proven system for excellent splice joints on the market. New features for higher package quality were developed with each machine generation, for example Autotense FX, Preci FX, Ecopack FX. This enabled us to continuously improve our product quality. It is a reliable partnership at the highest technical and technological level.Jürgen Schönberger, VGM of the Südwollegroup China
